John’s Gospel
This gospel story is a bit different from the other three, Matthew, Mark and Luke. It takes a big picture view which places Jesus and the people around him into a story which starts at the beginning of the universe and connects big ideas with the realities of everyday struggles to have a better life.
John crafted his account to be meaningful on lots of levels, including the use of the significant number seven, understood by the original readers to stand for perfection or completion of something by God.
John picks seven miraculous signs which show Jesus’ authority to point us to life itself. There are seven important witnesses picked out who saw what Jesus did, seven times Jesus refers to himself using a term people associated with God, and more.
We’ve made an original audio version of this gospel called “Time, Space, Jesus” - see if you can spot how sevens make their way into the soundtrack too!

Talks about John’s gospel
Who do we think Jesus is, and what difference does this make in our lives? Kyle Henderson-Begg looks at how Jesus’ followers dealt with this question. One of these, famous for doubting, changed their view in a close encounter with the risen Jesus, and their faith propelled them to share what they had found widely. What kind of encounter or experience with Jesus might we need to see him as he is, and who would we tell people that Jesus is?
What nutrition do we need to be healthy, physically or spiritually? Owen Lynch looks at the role of what we feed on, and the surprising claim from Jesus that he is real food and drink for us. What does it mean to practise feeding on Jesus?
