Day 19 – Know the son, know the father
John 8:12-30
Again, Jesus spoke to the people, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Then the Pharisees said to him, “You are testifying about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
Jesus answered them, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is valid, because I know where I came from, and where I’m going; but you don’t know where I’m from, or where I’m going. You judge by human standards. I judge no one. But even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but with the Father who sent me. And it is written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid. I am one who testifies about myself, and my other witness is the Father who sent me.”
So they said to him, “Where is your Father?”
Jesus answered, “You don’t know me or my Father. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.” Jesus said these things in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his time had not yet come. Then Jesus said again to them, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
The Jews said, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
He said to them, “You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. So I said to you that you will die in your sins, because unless you believe that I am who I am, you will die in your sins.”
So they said to him, “Who are you?”
Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you. But the one who sent me is trustworthy; and it’s the things which I heard from him that I say to the world.”
They didn’t understand that he was speaking to them about the Father. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am who I am, and I do nothing on my own, but I say these things just as my Father taught me. The one who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
As he said these things, many believed in him.
For reflection
What does it mean to you that Jesus is the light of the world?
