Genesis 11 - Tower of Babel - 14 June 2020
Here are some ideas that you could do with your children at home, that link the children’s everyday experiences to the Bible. As you play or create, you can talk about what happened in the story of the Tower of Babel.
TEACHING POINT
We can always talk to God. He loves it when we do!
PROGRAMME
Let’s Pretend
Construction- have you got some tools at home and a tool bag/box. Don’t forget your hard hat. What do you need to fix or build?
Language
There are over 7000 languages spoken all over the world. Can you learn a new way of saying hello in another language? Do you have any friends who speak another language? Maybe the next time you can surprise them by saying hello to them in their language.
Messy
Make a tower using dried spaghetti and marshmallows… measure your tower… I wonder who made the tallest! Google spaghetti towers. There are some pretty impressive creations out there!
Playdough
Put a stick of spaghetti in some playdough so it stands up and then thread cheerios or pasta onto the spaghetti. How many can you count?
Games
Have a large pile of bricks/blocks/cardboard boxes… Who can build the tallest tower in three minutes? Go, go, go… 😊
Craft
Make a cup telephone to talk to someone in your household with. All you need is cup and string (ask an adult to help you with the hole at the bottom of the cup).
Or you could even make your own speakers for a phone to make it louder. All that is needed are two plastic cups and a kitchen roll.
STORY TIME
If you have a Bible at home, find and read the story of The Tower of Babel.
You could read this story from the Beginners Bible page 34-38 or in your Bible Genesis 11.
The Tall Tower
After the flood, everyone spoke the same language. One word meant “hello”. One word meant “Mum” and one word meant “Dad”.
The people said, “If we work together, we can do anything. Let’s build a tower that goes all the way up to heaven. Then everyone will see how great we are!”
The people worked on their tower. They built it taller and taller. They began to brag. God did not like the way they were acting. It was as if they no longer needed him.
So God mixed up their language. When they tried to talk to each other, it sounded like “babble”. Everyone was confused!
Then God scattered the people all over the earth. They had to stop building their tower. From then on, the tower was called “Babel”.

A question: Who have you missed talking to during this time in lockdown? God is always there for us to talk to, no matter what, about anything! He loves it when we do. Is there anything that you want to talk to God about now? Share it with Him. He’s your heavenly dad and he loves to listen.
Pray together…
