Philip and the Ethiopian - 2 May 2021

Here are some ideas that you could do with your children at home, that link the children’s everyday experiences to the Bible. As you play or create, you can talk about what happened in the story of Philip and the Ethiopian.

You could watch this video of the story:

TEACHING POINT

God loves to talk to us through the Bible and when we don’t understand, He will help us.

PROGRAMME

Role play

Wash some babies or toys or even the dishes 😊 What happens when you put things in water? It gets clean. As you wash, talk with your children about how when we get baptized, it’s like Jesus is cleaning all the bad stuff away and we are clean and ready for a new adventure with him.

Playdough

As you begin to fill the symbols with playdough, you can talk about what you might think the symbols mean and how they link to baptism.

A cross, A dove to represent the Holy Spirit, A heart to represent God's love for us, Water to represent cleansing and being born to new life, Candle to represent being the light of Jesus to our friends.

Craft

Make your own Philip and the Ethiopian chariot. All you need is a yoghurt pot, pegs, pipe cleaners, card and then follow the link above to create the chariot, which you can then use to act out the story.

MESSAGE AND PRAYER

God loves to speak to us through the Bible, that is why He gave it to us. But maybe you can relate to or understand the man from Ethiopia because sometimes you hear someone talking or reading the Bible and you don’t understand. Sometimes adults don’t understand what we read in Bible and that’s ok.

The Holy Spirit sent Philip to help the Ethiopian understand more. God puts people around us to help us learn and to help us grow in understanding how to be Jesus’ disciples and friends. Who can you think of that might be able to help you understand the Bible more? It could be your parents, friends, leaders at church and other Christians and we can always ask the Holy Spirit!

The most exciting thing is that when the Ethiopian heard the news about how much Jesus loved him, he wanted to know more, he wanted to get baptized and be Jesus’ friend too.

Pray for your week together!
